Fáilte roimh go Féile Patrick Byrne 2023. Féile cheoil traidisiúnta na hÉireann í seo a thugann ómós do Patrick Byrne (1794-1863). Ba é an chéad cheoltóir traidisiúnta riamh ar tógadh grianghraf de.

We are delighted that Eilis Lavelle has taken on the role of festival patron. An outstanding harp player, Eilis is also an authority on the Edward Bunting collections of harp music and we are thrilled to have her help and support.

Déardaoin – 30th March

Official opening and the annual Patrick Byrne Lecture
The Shirley Arms, 8pm – adm. free.

Irish Times columnist and Carrickmacross native Frank Mc Nally will deliver this year’s lecture on ‘The Harper that Once’ – Frank’s rediscovery of his own family links to Patrick Byrne. As well as being a great-great-grandnephew of 19th century harper, Frank is an award-winning writer and the chief contributor to the Irish Diary column in the Irish Times.

Seisiún amhránaíochta – Irish traditional singing session
9pm – Deery’s lounge, Carrickmacross – adm. free and all welcome.

A dedicated singing session with specially invited guest singers from Counties Monaghan and Armagh to lead. All singers are welcome with the rule being that while no standard is set for the singing, a very high standard is set for the listening!

Ceolchoirm le Gráinne Holland
8pm – St. Finbarr’s Church – adm. €10
Singer, songwriter, media producer and presenter – renaissance woman Gráinne Holland is one of the finest bi-lingual singers currently performing. With a superb backing band this promises to be a very special concert in the atmospheric and intimate setting of St. Finbarr’s Church.

Fíor Céilí leis an Michael Duffy Céilí Band
9pm – The Community Centre, Corduff – adm. €8
A fíor céilí organised by the Corduff & Raferagh Céilí Dancing Club featuring local accordion maestro Michael Duffy. Admission includes refreshments and dances are not called.

Music Workshops
10.30am to 1pm – The Workhouse, Carrickmacross
• Fun Trad with Seán Walsh and Sinéad Finnegan – a class aimed at younger students who would not be ready for regular workshops. The emphasis is on having fun with music. Places are limited to 15 and fee is €5.
• Local repertoire with Eilis Lavelle – a class for everyone irrespective of whether you play accordion, banjo, concertina, fiddle, flute, harp or pipes. Champion harper Eilis Lavelle has put together a special workshop on local tunes that rarely get taught elsewhere. This workshop is suitable for musicians aged 12 to 18 who are looking for distinctive tunes. Places are limited to 15 and the fee is €10.
Registration will be from 9.45am but places can be reserved by sending an email to info@feilepatrickbyrne.ie with student’s name, age and contact telephone.

Guided Walking Tour
11 am – meet at the Carrickmacross Court House. Free event.
Historian Mary Kerley will guide walkers around Carrickmacross and bring alive the vibrant history of the town. The tour takes approximately 90 minutes and walkers should wear comfortable shoes and perhaps bring an umbrella!

Open youth traditional session organised by the Carrickmacross CCÉ Youth Officers with all teen musicians welcome. No speed limits!

8pm – St. Louis Secondary School Hall – adm. €10 adults / under 18s €5.

Clare natives Tara Breen and Pádraig Rynne have teamed up with Jim Murray to form one of the finest performing groups in Irish music today. Their 2021 release “Nasc” is regarded as one of the best albums in recent years from an Irish Traditional outfit and was winner of the best traditional album in the 2022 American Celtic listener supported radio awards. A rare opportunity to hear these master musicians who have gelled together to create a fantastic sound. Not to be missed!

Support will be provided by the local CCÉ music group who are travelling to Brittany this Easter.

Sean Nós Dance Workshop
Noon to 2pm – St. Louis Secondary School Hall, Carrickmacross
Aoife Mc Cabe will lead this class which is suitable for both beginners and improvers. Wear comfortable shoes. Workshop fee €10.

Sets Céilí with the Salamanca Céilí Band
3pm – St. Louis Secondary School Hall – Adm. €10.
The Salamanca play music of a deadly standard that will make you move in ways you thought wasn’t possible. Their’s is a musical partnership that is hard beaten. The sets will be called and refreshments served.

Seisiún ceoil – Reel Slow
6pm to 8pm – Deery’s Lounge – adm. free.
A dedicated slow session suitable for novice and improver musicians hosted by the local adult slow session group and led by fiddle player Noreen McManus. Speed limits apply but all are welcome.

Seisiún ceoil – Survivors’ session
8pm ‘till late – Deery’s Lounge – adm. free.
Final open music session of the féile with all musicians, singers and dancers welcome. Hup!
